Theatre Joins Toilet Twinning Project

Posted on: 26th January, 2022

Theatre Royal is delighted to be part of the Bury St Edmunds Toilet Twinning project.

Toilet Twinning is a UK charity which twins toilets in this country with those in developing countries. A donation of just £60 provides the materials and expertise for communities in developing countries, such as Malawi, to build their own basic toilets. 1 in 4 people (2 billion) across the world do not have a safe and hygienic toilet.

To achieve ‘Twinned’ status for the town the Rotary Club of Bury St Edmunds (long term supporters of Theatre Royal) had to twin 20 of the town’s toilets that were open to the public. This target has been exceeded with over 50 organisations, businesses, schools, charities and individuals, including the theatre, now having their toilets twinned as part of the initiative.  As the latest organisation to join a presentation was made on January 13th 2022 by Rotary Club President, David Mansfield, and Immediate Past President, Chris Minett to some of the cast of the Pantomime.

Rotarian Jenny Benfield, Chair of the Club’s International Committee, a long time supporter of the charity, explained that it helped communities to help themselves by providing the materials, technical advice and guidance for them to build and maintain their own simple toilets. Good sanitation brings dramatic improvements in health, so that adults are able to work and children are well enough to go to school. The initiative makes a huge difference to the lives of people in some of the most deprived countries in the world.

Anyone wishing to support the charity and twin their own toilet should visit www.toilettwinning.org  and add the tag BSETT in order to be part of the Bury St Edmunds Town Toilet Twinning initiative.
